The legend of the Children of Lír has its roots on the shores of Lough Derravaragh in county Westmeath. According to this charming Irish myth, King Lír’s children spent 300 years on this lake, turned into swans by their evil stepmother who was jealous of the children’s strong bond with their father.

One of the biggest horse races of the year, the Midland's Grand National, is staged in mid-July in Kilbeggan’s racecourse, near Mullingar in Westmeath. The winning jockey takes home a whopping €50,000!
